Petit Louis Bistro: Classic French Cuisine

This charming French bistro has quickly become a favorite for its stellar service and classic menu of French comfort food. The ambiance is friendly, boisterous, and unpretentious, just like a lively Paris bistro, but sans the cigarette smoke and the pooches that accompany their masters and mistresses to dine. Duck Leg Confit, Trout Almondine, and Steak Frittes are some of the entrees inspiring kudos from patrons. Save room for the luscious pot au crème or chocolate mousse for dessert. Choose a bottle or a glass from their comprehensive wine list and linger over your meal in the flickering glow of the fireplace. It’s a great, romantic spot to savor a stellar repast and the prices are reasonable for this level of fine dining. Petit Louis Bistro serves brunch on Sunday.

Ethel and Ramone’s: Chesapeake Bay Cajun

Diners say “laissez les bons temps rouler” – let the good times roll – when it comes to Ethel and Ramone’s. It’s Maryland-style Creole cuisine melding the bounty of the Chesapeake Bay with traditional Louisiana recipes. Try their authentic gumbo, a savory mix of seafood and sausage simmered in a rich broth that takes days to achieve its uniquely exotic flavor. Jumbo lump crab cakes are another favorite, served with mashed potatoes and a creamy remoulade sauce. Oyster po’boys, jambalaya, red beans and rice, shrimp Creole, and fried chicken are some of the other culinary stars featured on the menu. A friendly vibe, attentive service, and reasonable prices make Ethel and Ramone's a great dining experience.

Henninger’s Tavern: Delicious Cuisine

Can you rate a restaurant by the quality of its crab cakes? If so, then Henninger’s is a winner, because theirs are worthy of five stars, with big chunks of sweet crab melded into a moist-on-the-inside, crisp-on-the-outside patty served with basil aioli and red cabbage slaw. The ambiance of this little Baltimore standby is charming and unpretentious, with white tablecloths on small, lamp-lit tables, and mismatched wall art that’s decades away from today’s trendy, designer restaurant interiors. The menu is old-school too, with pork chops and mashed potatoes, filet mignon with potatoes au gratin, and shellfish linguini, to name a few of the well-prepared entrees. Stop by the bar for a drink while you wait for a table or make a reservation to avoid a wait.

Grrche: Classic Grilled Cheese

What’s Grrche? Grilled cheese, of course, the American favorite that can be as basic – think the toasted Velveeta and white bread of your youth savored with a bowl of tomato soup – or as eclectic as your imagination can dream up. They’ve come up with lots of creative takes on the sandwich, including the Lobster Grill with succulent pieces of fish and melted Monterrey Jack on Texas toast; and the BCT, a bacon, tomato, and cheddar version. They usually have three soups, including the perfect grilled cheese accompaniment, tomato. Grrche serves its sammies out of a roving food truck from 10:30 to 1:30 p.m. in various downtown locations. Check their website for Grrche's daily schedule.
